I have been working on an exciting collaboration for a few years now that has been an incredibly fufilling growth experience. Lois LeBlanc, LCPC, Alex Katopis, LCPC and I have been exploring the deeper meanings of archetypes, myths and stories. We co-created Wisdom Journeys, LLC so that we could bring workshop participants to the actual places that the stories were birthed. Our collective vision was to create a unique and affordable opportunity that combines self-care, self-exploration, travel, and experiential training.

In May, 2020 we will be visiting Ancient Crete, Greece to explore "The Myth of the Labyrinth". This highly experiential wisdom journey is specifically designed for individuals and mental health professionals who are interested in learning more about incorporating elements of story, myth, archetypes, metaphor and creativity into their personal healing work and in clinical practice. This workshop is for anyone who is interested; mental health professionals will earn a certificate with 12 contact hours.

We will explore the various ways that this myth connects to different parts within ourselves and discover through our own personal experience ways to work with this metaphor with our clients in clinical practice.Through our own experience of the Myth of the Labyrinth we will gain a much deeper understanding of how to work with story and metaphor in our own lives and in clinical practice. Once we have a greater understanding of our own stories we will be able to more deeply help other understand and explore theirs. The workshops will be presented at a leisurely pace with plenty of time to explore the beautiful island of Crete on your own as well if you desire.

Connecting to the Labyrinth

The Labyrinth has long been a symbol of change and transformation. It is an archetypal journey of the Self toward wholeness and is well represented in antiquity while maintaining its mystery and relevance in modern times. During this experiential workshop series we will we will visit the ancient ruins of the most famous labyrinth in Greek Mythology. The labyrinth serves as an archetypal symbol of the journey of consciousness and as integration of various part of ourselves, bringing us closer to the “Self” as eternal. We will be engaging in discussion, active imagination, writing, guided visualization, and art to explore this powerful archetype.

The Myth

In the Myth of the Labyrinth, the bestial Minotaur is imprisoned in the labyrinth by King Minos, who embodies aggression and greed (the shadow of the patriarchy.) It was designed to protect others in the same way that we bury and compartmentalize our own inner shadow characters. King Minos has a daughter, Ariadne, whose name means "Most Holy” (echoes from when she was revered as divine mother). Ariadne appeals to the hero, Theseus, promising him that she will give him the means to slay the Minotaur and a thread to guide him out if he will take her with him when he leaves, which he does. Theseus comes to symbolize the power and limits of our inner heroism.
